Disarmament and Non-Proliferation of

Weapons of Mass Destruction



From 29 August - 3 September 2011 the T.M.C. Asser Instituut for International Law, in partnership with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), will organize the second annual summer training programme in The Hague, the Netherlands on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction in a changing world.

This second-year programme is specifically designed for advanced graduate students and young professionals who are interested in pursuing careers in arms control, and will provide unique insight into treaties, organizations and effective multilateral approaches in WMD disarmament and non-proliferation.

The programme content will be delivered by experienced officials of the OPCW and other international organizations together with international experts in international law and related disciplines, offering participants hands-on knowledge transfer from key professionals in the field.

Fascinating landscapes, enchanting views, small towns and famous cities of art in Umbria and in Tuscany:
their colors and their flavors suggested us these thematic journey.
Every excursion is ideally characterized by colors, always different, which will accompany you in your daily
trips.
You will discover the most interesting places of this area and taste its gastronomic specialities.
1. Day - Monday, the 23rd of May 2011
Arrival in Chianciano Terme, check in, welcome drink, dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
2. Day – Tuesday, the 24th of May 2011
“THE GREEN UMBRIA AND THE ORCIA VALLEY”
Breakfast in hotel. Today you will go to Assisi, the small town where St. Francis was born. You will be
astonished by the green landscape in which the city is plugged, and by its inexplicable aura of peace and
serenity.
You will visit Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Porziuncola, and, later, the historical centre. You will admire in
a respectful silence the St. Francis Basilica.
Back to hotel for lunch.
In the afternoon, through the countryside of the Val d’Orcia, part of the UNESCO heritage, driving close to
Radicofani, you will arrive at Bagno Vignoni, picturesque town known worldwide for its thermal springs
coming out in the main square. You will surely not be able to resist taking a relaxing footbath in the hot
thermal water.
Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
3. Day – Wednesday, the 25th of May 2011
“RED, THE COLOR OF THE LILY, SIMBOL OF FLORENCE”
Breakfast in hotel. Today you will visit Florence, cradle of the Italian language. You will have a walk in the
centre of this magnificent city and with a local guide you will visit its artistic treasures : Piazza della Signoria,
Palazzo Vecchio, Loggia dei Lanzi, Ponte Vecchio and the jewelries, the Baptistery and the Duomo.
Lunch in a restaurant.
In the afternoon you will go to San Lorenzo Market, and have some free time for your shopping.
In the evening you will be back in the hotel for dinner. Overnight stay at the hotel.
4. Day – Thursday, the 26th of May 2011
“SIENNA”
Breakfast in hotel. This morning, driving through the hills, after those the characteristic color is named, you
will go to Siena, one of the most fascinating medieval cities in Italy. You will take a walk in the historical
centre, close to the Duomo and in Piazza del Campo, where, two times a year, the well known Palio is
contended.
Lunch in a restaurant.
After lunch you will visit San Gimignano, which was one of the unavoidable stopping places along the Via
Francigena, and now is known as “the Tuscan Manhattan” thanks to its many brown towers.
In the evening you will be back in the hotel for dinner. Overnight stay at the hotel.
5. Day – Friday, the 27th of May 2011
YELLOW LIKE SUNFLOWERS AND THE TUSCAN SUN
Breakfast in hotel. During this excursion, driving through the Tuscan countryside, which in summer is yellow
of sunflowers, you will visit Cortona, set of “Under the Tuscan Sun”. You will stroll along the medieval alleys
and will be astonished by the breathtaking views that open through the old city walls, over the gorgeous
Tuscan Campagna.
Back in hotel for lunch.
In the afternoon you will visit Montepulciano, known as “the Pearl of the Renaissance”, where the famous
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG is produced. Not only. The topic scene of “New Moon” was filmed in the
sunny Piazza Grande!
“Renaissance Evening” with typical local dinner. Flag-waving show of “sbandieratori” local performers.
Back in hotel and overnight stay.
6. Day – Saturday, the 28th May 2011
“BLU THERMAL WATER AND RELAXING SHOPPING”
Breakfast in hotel.
This morning you will have time for leisure and for visiting the spa town of Chianciano Terme: we suggest
you going to the Archeological Museum and to the Contemporary and Modern Art Museum.
Back in hotel for lunch.
During the afternoon you will go to Bettolle: let’s do some shopping in the many best Italian fashion brands
shops in the Valdichiana Outlet Village.
The evening will be devoted to greetings, buffet dinner and entertainment at the Terme di Chianciano.
Overnight stay at hotel.
7. Day – Sunday, the 29th 2011
Breakfast in hotel.

1. IPA HOUSE IN SECTION UK - COLCHESTER, ENGLAND

Section UK, Number 10 Region have been receiving visitors to their new
apartment situated in Colchester, Essex, England.

Here are a few things you might like to know about Colchester:

It was the capital of Roman Britain when London was just a trading post.
It has the largest surviving Roman gateway in Britain.
It has 1½ miles (2½ km) of Roman wall, the oldest town wall in Britain.
It has a large number of ancient mosaic floorings, one of the largest
concentrations for a town of its size. Some remain untouched in the
ground under modern day buildings in and around the town. Others are now
the responsibility of Colchester Museums and are either in storage or on
display in Colchester Castle Museum, such as the Middleborough Mosaic
unearthed in 1979.
Colchester Castle is the largest surviving Norman keep in Europe.
Colchester Castle pre-dates the Tower of London and was in fact the
blueprint for it.
Colchester Castle was the first Royal Castle outside of London.
Colchester Castle is built on the massive foundations of the Roman
Temple of Claudius.
Colchester was under siege for 11 weeks during the English Civil War in
1648.
The town's skyline is dominated by two Victorian masterpieces - the Town
Hall and 'Jumbo' a water tower built in 1882-3. It became known as Jumbo
after the famous elephant in London Zoo which had then just been sold,
amid national protests, to the American circus showman, P. T. Barnum.
Colchester was the location for a major British earthquake in 1884.
Colchester has one of the country's few Frisbee Golf courses which has
hosted the European Frisbee Golf championships. It's located at the
University of Essex.

Dear IPA Friends,

For the last 43 years IPA Cologne has organised its own Carnival event in the Brunosaal (Köln-Klettenberg, Klettenberggürtel 65).
It takes the form of an international evening with music and dance, since music overcomes all language barriers… and all for a moderate entrance price 20,00 Euro and normal pub prices without pressure to order wine.

Once again IPA Friends from England, Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria and Italy, as well as from all parts of Germany have already booked with us. The hall will soon be fully booked.

Furthermore since 1999 IPA-Cologne has been organising a full Carnival week with international guests. Next year up to 100 guests will be accommodated in hotels from Carnival Friday to Rose Monday .

World Police Indoor Soccer Tournament

Dear Colleagues,


The Dutch police has the great honour to invite the IPA Serbia to the 28th edition
of the World Police Indoor Soccer Tournament in Eibergen/ Groenlo and Zieuwent in
the Netherlands (men’s, men’s 35+ and women’s competitions).
Our 2009 Tournament was a great success. 180 teams, approximately 2900 colleagues
from 45 countries turned it into a fantastic experience.
Attached to this mail you will find the official 2010 invitation and all other
necessary information.
Tournament:
The tournament will take place in 5 sports halls in Eibergen, Groenlo & Zieuwent.
Teams will play 5 against 5. There will be:
-A men’s tournament. (102 teams)

-A women’s tournament. (45 teams)

-A men’s 35+ tournament. (45 teams)

The floor of the playing area is synthetic. The Tournament will be played over three
days. 180 teams (men/ men 35+ & women) from over 45 countries will compete. This
year we expect participants from Europe, Australia, Africa, Asia, North and South
America.

Dear friends,

It is with intense regret that the IPA Section The Netherlands has decided to cancel the intended 1st IPA World Seminar for Young Police Officers in August 2010.

This decision was taken during our National Committee Meeting, which was held in Gimborn from 11th-13th December 2009.

Main factor is that the expected participation from other sections has not been met. Only 5 sections (10 participants) have applied for participation in accordance with the set deadline (November 30th).

Disappointing and sad for we must recognise the fact that all our efforts up to now have not ensured sufficient participation for this seminar.

However, this does not mean that we will stop pursuing our “battle” to still work hard and achieve this magnificent opportunity.

We will survey and evaluate the process of this organisation and pick up and continue our efforts in the realisation of this seminar.

During the World Congress in Turkey many sections were happy with the initiative. This has triggered us to continue. Suggestions made to us there will be implemented and added to other additional steps we can take to go on.

We thank the sections that have applied for participation. Those sections that also have already paid for their participation will be refunded as soon as possible by the National Treasurer of our section.

Information on continuation and details will be submitted in time before the congress in
France 2010.

The Peacekeeping Training Programme of the United Nations Institute for

The Polish Section would like to invite you to The International IPA House Managers Meeting that will take place in Poland from Monday, the 24th of May to Wednesday, the 26th of May 2010 year. The meeting will take place at “MCT” Hotel in Żerków.
The total price per person for the stay at “MTC” Hotel is 360€ in a single room and 320€

Dear All

OPEN DAY AT THE BRITISH SECTION ADMIN CENTRE AND INTERNATIONAL ADMIN
CENTRE - SATURDAY 24 JULY 2010

As part of the special Diamond Jubilee Celebrations next year, the two
Admin Centres, situated at 1 Fox Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham,
England will be opening their doors to members and guests for an Open
Day on Saturday 24 July 2010.

The programme is in the very early stages but here's what's being
organised:

In the morning:

- arrival by members and guests at their leisure. A welcoming
coffee/tea and biscuits will be served at the world famous Trent Bridge
Cricket Ground (situated on the other side of Fox Road). Thereafter,
visitors are free to wander back across to the Admin Centres to tour the
building and look at the many items of memorabilia on display. So we
don't get too overcrowded with everyone visiting at the same time, we're
organising optional tours of Trent Bridge Cricket Ground throughout the
day.

In the afternoon:

- at 12.45pm - 3pm a finger buffet with bar will be available at the
Cricket Ground. By mid-day we hope all our visitors will have arrived
but if not there'll still be an opportunity to visit the Admin Centres.
Members of the international and national executive committees and staff
will be here to welcome you throughout the day. West Bridgford is in
easy reach of Nottingham City Centre so anyone wanting to fill their
time at the shops or any of the tourist attractions can do so.

In the evening:

- Nottinghamshire Branch will host a three course gala dinner in the
banqueting suite at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground from 7pm - 12pm.


As soon as more precise details are available we will issue them, along
with booking forms. In the meantime, we do hope you will put the date
in your diary and consider paying us a visit. We hope to make it a
special event with as many people as possible visiting from afar. If
you feel it's a long way to travel just for an Open Day, there's plenty
to do and see in and around Nottingham so why not make a weekend of it.
East Midlands Airport is only 20 minutes away with a superb shuttle bus
running backwards and forwards every half an hour (the stop is 5
minutes' walk from Fox Road).

Remember - Saturday 24 July 2010!
